Week 1 Reflective Learning Journal

Introduction to Week 1

    This was the first week of the course, and I was extremely excited to learn more about the instructor and my peers. I have no prior experience to the Humanities so it's a completely new subject to me and I hope to learn as much as possible from this course. 

Content

    This week, I learned about all the different types of art and what role they play in society. Two of the main things that art can do in society was give positive feelings of both happiness and love, but also negative feelings of sadness and loneliness. I was never a good artist, and I didn't really care much about art, so this week's lesson was much of an eye opener for me. I learned just how much i was holding myself back from experiencing all these new and amazing emotions. From the video “What Is Art” I learned all about the different mediums in which art is expressed and it really broadened my scope to how someone could even find enjoyment to paint some oranges, and why. 




    From the other video I watched this week,“What is History for”, I learned more about how History can be used as a learning resource not only for the present, but also for the future. History allows us to not make the same mistakes we’ve made in the past but also learn and grow from them. I feel that this is especially important in warfare, politics, and even economics, where we learn from past stock market trends to try our best to predict new ones. From what I learned this week, I feel like history is one of the most important forms of art just because of the sheer impact and legacy that our every action has on future generations, and how we will continue to influence the world even after we pass.

Getting to Know My Peers

I completed a peer introduction discussion post on Canvas and created a video over my hobbies and interests. It was really cool watching and commenting on my peers posts because I learned that even though I had never met them face to face, we actually had so much in common with each other. Almost everyone in the course enjoys music!

Syllabus

    There were a lot of guidelines and rules to remember to follow, but I knew that they were important for my success in the course. The three main things I took from it were the the course expectations regarding late work policy, plagiarism, and the use of AI when completing work.

Reflection

    This first week was an eye-opening experience as I explored the role of art in society and its emotional impact. I also gained a new appreciation for history, recognizing how it serves as a tool for learning from past mistakes and shaping the future. Connecting with my peers through discussions helped me realize how much we have in common, making me feel more engaged in the course.

 Introduction to Week 5 There wasn't much new stuff that I learned from week 4 to week 5, It was more of a continuation week where I applied the stuff that I learned into a discussion post and a reflection assignment. The discussion post was really fun as I learned a lot more about art and its symbolism. Discussion Post This was the second discussion post that I was doing, so I had gotten more comfortable with the assignment and it was much easier for me to choose something and complete the assignment. For the discussion post I choose the "Dying Gaul", a marble sculpture from the Greek Hellenistic period (c. 230–220 B.C.E.), attributed to Epigonus, with Roman copies made in the 1st or 2nd century C.E. I find it interesting because it depicts a warrior in his last moments of life. It shows how he is slouched over and can't stand because of the wound he received. Reflective Learning Journal Week 6

Introduction to Week 6 This week I learned more about the history of the Roman Empire. Building upon the end of the Greek Empire, I learned about the transition with Emperor Caesar. It was really interesting to learn just how much influence the Greeks had upon Roman society,  they took their art, culture, religion, and even philosophy. Content I was always interested in Roman culture and history, so it really came as a shock to find how little I knew about them. This week I learned how the Roman spanned from Britain to North Africa. It was honestly insane just how massive the roman Empire was. Some of the key things I learned was about the  era of peace during Augustus's term which was also called Pax Romania under Augustus. One of the things I really liked about the Roman Empire were how religiously tolerant they were. I believe that this was the reason that their empire was so successful. Reflective Learning Journal Week 8

Introduction to Week 8  This is the final week of my course and my final discussion post. I learned a lot throughout the entirety of the course and I am really glad I decided to take it. If you have followed me throughout the entire 8 week journey I would like to say thank you and I hope I inspired you to learn more about the Humanities and try to learn more about the course on your own time.
