Reflective Learning Journal Week 4
Introduction to Week 4
This week I learned more about Ancient Greece and Classical Era which played a major role in shaping Western Culture. It was really exciting learning more about the rise of city-state culture as I have always liked to learn about the wars and rivalries between Athens and Sparta. Additionally we also covered some of the most influential philosophers such as Socrates and Plato.
Content
There was a lot of content that I learned this week particularly about Greek Culture. I learned about the distinction between Greece, and Hellas, which was that they simply just different names for the same kingdom in different languages but that the Greeks called themselves the Hellas. One of the most interesting things I learned about this week was about the role of women in Greek society. This was the first society that we learned about that major differences in gender roles. Men did the majority of the work, while women sat and tended to the children. One major difference between Greece and other major societies during this time was that it did not completely ignore the education of young girls, they simply educated them in the arts of caretaking and molding them into becoming a better wife. Many of the major roles that women played in society were still mostly dependant on wether or not they were married, or wether or not they were still a virgin.
Assignments
There were just 3 short quizzes that I had to complete over the topics that I learned this week. They were mostly about the influence between Greece and Persia, and the Dark Ages from 1100-800 BCE.
Reflection
Although this was a short week, I learned a lot about Ancient Greece and its role in shaping Western culture. I found the discussion about the differences in gender roles and the educational experiences of women in Greek society particularly interesting. The week also covered the influence of Greece and Persia, along with the Dark Ages, which was a key period in history.
