Reflective Learning Journal Week 7
Introduction to Week 7
This week I had a lot of different assignments including a few quizzes, a test, a discussion post, and a reflection assignment. I really had to apply all of the stuff I learned in the last week as well as learn all of the new concepts introduced this week.
Content
This week the new stuff I learned about was about all of the new forms of Roman art. I learned about how it was largely inspired by the Greeks. The focused distinctive realism and fine tuning accurate details in sculptures. They also introduced coinage, new architecture, and high end jewelry to their societies. Another thing that I learned about was the Appian Way, Rome's ancient highway that facilitated trade along the Roman Empire.
Chapter 3 Quiz
This was the major test that was worth 72 points. Not only did it have a lot of multiple choice questions, it also tasked me with writing a few essay response questions. It turned out to be ok in the end, but it was a lot of work completing the assignment.
Discussion Post
For my discussion post for this week I chose the Villa of Mysteries. It is unknown who and when exactly this piece of artwork was created, but it is known that it was created around 70-60 BCE. It is located in Pompeii, Italy and was made with Roman and Greek influence. The entire painting is 17 meters long and 3 meters high. The piece of artwork describes a ritual done for the Greek God Dionysus. This piece of artwork really piqued my interest because rather than a conventional painting that is just one-piece painting, this piece is split in multiple parts that are made in a room. Putting all together depicts a story, with just pictures and images. It was really cool making a post about it as I had never before seen an artwork that spanned across across a whole room.
Reflection Assignment
For my reflective learning assignment for this week I focused on Stoic philosophy and how I can apply it into my own life. Stoicism is a philosophical idea that you should always live a life maintaining inner peace along with self-control and reason. This was largely prevalent during the time of the Romans. Basically, what stoicism means is to focus on yourself, and the actions that you can do rather than focusing on external circumstances that you can’t. This helps people live a more fulfilling life where they are less worried and stressed about different things. Stoicism prioritizes virtue, wisdom, and courage. A Stoic would handle adversity by first understanding that it is something that they themselves cannot control. I would try to just focus on what I need to do and what can I do. I feel like living life like is a lot simpler and easier than constantly stressing over everything that coulda would shoulda happened.
Reflection
This week, I learned about Roman art, including their realism in sculptures, coinage, architecture, and jewelry. I also focused on Stoic philosophy, which teaches self-control and inner peace, helping with stress management. For my assignments, I completed a quiz, discussion post on the Villa of Mysteries, and a reflection on applying Stoicism to life.
